These dogs come from Newfoundland Island in Canada, where they were said to have first arrived with the British and French fishermen. They have an excellent sense of smell and excel in tracking, agility and competitive obedience. This breed is not recommended for small apartments.

The breed might have sprung from the Great Pyrenees and Tibetan Mastiff. Early settlers bred these dogs specifically for cart-pulling. These dogs are great swimmers, because they have a water-resistant coat, long and droopy upper lips and webbed feet.
