The most distinctive feature of this hog is the solid hoof which resembles that of a mule. This breed is unique to the United States and is very rare. Recent breeding efforts, however, have led to more optimism regarding the breed’s survival.

The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy classifies this hog population as Critical. The origin of this breed is not clear, but it has a well-documented history over the last century. In 1910 there were 235 breeders registered in twenty-two states. Mulefoot hogs are very rare, so finding breeders with babies for sale maybe hard but not impossible.
