Monkey Photo

These animals are found in South and Central America, Africa and some of the southern parts of Asia. Tropical forests and subtropics are their natural habitat. Due to year-round warm temperatures, they find their necessary food supply. They make up about 90 per cent of the suborder Anthropoidea. There are two separate infraorders of anthropoidea that have evolved independently: Catarrhines and Platyrrhines. Catarrhines (Old World species) are larger in size, and are mostly semi-terrestrial. They are more intelligent and share some features with humans.

Platyrrhines (New World species) are smaller in size, and are termed ‘non-human’ primates. They have a flat nose with widely placed nostrils and a prehensile tail that is used as a ‘third hand’. These two infraorders have evolved separately for 30,000,000 years, and they differ greatly according to the level of development. Monkeys feed on flower, grass, leaves, nuts, roots, insects, birds’ eggs, frogs, and lizards. Primates are social animals. As for New World species, their groups usually consist of 20 members at maximum. Old World troops have from 30 to 100 members.
