Some biologists divided the genus Ateles into several species, but for others there is only one name for ateles that is valid (Ateles Paniscus.) This species lives in lowland rain forests from Mexico to South America, along the coasts of the Amazon, and the mountain slopes of the Andes. Their habitats are mainly on the tree canopy. Groups of these animals defend their ranges with screams, barks and thrown branches. Males mark their territory with secretions from the chest glands. These animals are social, and males usually dominate the group. A male maintains a kind of ‘harem’ and mates with all the females in estrus. Gestation lasts 139 days, and it takes about 10 months for the young to become independent. These animals live 20-25 years. Some species are facing the risk of extinction, as they lose their habitat. Species found in Costa Rica are highly endangered and listed by the US Fish & Wildlife Service.
