The blue throat macaw is exceedingly rare; chicks are highly prized by the exotic bird breeder.
These beautiful birds are nearly extinct from the wild due to habitat destruction, environmental pollution and illegal pet trade. There are only about 300 of them left in their native land and their numbers are still decreasing. These birds are rare as pets, so they are rather expensive.

Compared to other species in the genus, these birds are rather large, with the body length of 29-32 inches and wingspan of 35-40 inches.
