The hound, being a very natural breed, tends to be very healthy. Breeders, however, should have all breeding stock eye tested. As with many small breeds there can be a problem with Patella Luxation. On the whole these hounds are healthy.

The other type of the breed that is called the large type is compared to some of the flock guards or mastiffs, and is reminiscent of a small Samoyed or a Lapphund in white, chocolate or black. Standard type of the hound is used as a pet and companion. No reputable dog breeder will allow to surrender purebred puppies to rescues.
