This breed appeared in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s and has the blood of mastiffs of the old days. These huge dogs were used as warriors and human companions, and performed a variety of functions and gave rise to many modern breeds.

The breed was crossed with terriers to create the dogs that were used in dog fighting and were known to be indifferent to pain. The breed is rare today and it is difficult to find a breeder. The United National Kennel Club based in Manchester is the only club that recognizes these dogs.
