This breed descended from animals taken to the Iceland by the Vikings from northern Scandinavia and the British Isles. In the 10th century the importation of any more horses was banned to prevent diseases, so this breed originated from a small gene pool.

This breed is exceptionally hardy and easy to maintain, its temperament is excellent and they are very intelligent and loyal.
