This breed is exceptionally hardy and easy to maintain, its temperament is excellent and they are very intelligent and loyal. The size of these creatures is from 12 to 14 hands at the shoulders; they are rather stocky, with a deep chest and strong limbs.

This breed descended from animals taken to the Iceland by the Vikings from northern Scandinavia and the British Isles. In the 10th century the importation of any more horses was banned to prevent diseases, so this breed originated from a small gene pool. Iceland horse foals, like any other horse baby, require care and training.
