This canine arrived in Iceland with first Viking settlers (AD 874-930.) These animals have a very thick coat and sturdy body, and are well adapted to harsh Nordic climate. Most probably, the breed descended from the Norwegian Buhund brought by Scandinavian colonists.

These animals are rarely found outside Iceland, but are not in danger of extinction. They are lively, alert and playful, and they welcome strangers by cheerful barking.
