The rufous hummingbird chicks are usually well protected by the adult bird.
This species is from 3 to 3.5 inches in length including the bill and the tail. They nest in the vast territory from Alaska to northwestern United States. In spite of their size, they migrate across great distances to South Mexico.

Males have brown backs, flanks and tail, brownish-red crown and face, bright red gorget and white breast. Females and the young are not very bright; they have various shades of reddish brown and green in their plumage. The rufous hummingbird chicks are usually well protected by the adult bird.
