Males of this species have brown backs, flanks and tail, brownish-red crown and face, bright red gorget and white breast. Females and the young are not very bright, having various shades of reddish brown and green in their plumage.

This species is from 3 to 3.5 inches in length including the bill and the tail. They nest in the vast territory from Alaska to northwestern United States. In spite of their small size, they migrate great distances to South Mexico. The rufus hummingbird cannont be obtained through a breeder but can sometimes be seen in a zoo aviary.
