Hummingbird Feeders

Hummingbird feeders are excellent devices with which you can attract hummingbirds; watch them dance miraculously in midair every day without having to lock them in cages. Hummingbirds are but the smallest and loveliest creatures on the planet, and their company can make your life as colorful and iridescent as they are themselves. For many years, people have used do-it-yourself hummingbird feeders made from dishes, bottles, glass tubes and so forth.

The ever-growing public interest in attracting and feeding hummingbirds has prompted manufacturers to design various types of available hummingbird feeders. Commercial feeders of today feature one or several feeder ports to allow easy access to sugar water for hummingbirds and ant moats to deter flying and crawling insects. Some feeders are equipped with perches so birds can lounge, relax, and rest.

All commercial hummingbird feeders are crafted in such a way as to be the first objects for hummingbirds to notice in your home garden. As hummingbirds have proven to love everything red, most feeders are either red all over or at least partially. As a rule, a feeder consists of a water reservoir made of glass or plastic and a suspension hook attached to it. Reservoirs can be of various sizes and shapes. Some one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted feeders feature ornaments, are berry or flower-shaped, and are much more expensive than most manufactured feeders. In order to facilitate dis-assembly and cleaning, commercial hummingbird feeders are constructed in a simple way, and they do not feature many parts. Hummingbird feeders range in price from $10 to $20.

If you are a novice in attracting and feeding hummingbirds, you'd better not purchase a large hummingbird feeder. Start off with a small one instead. It takes awhile to attract hummingbirds because they usually do just fine with all the flower nectar in your garden. A can of sugar water near your window is but the last thing they care about. Usually, it takes several days for a hummingbird to gain confidence and venture close to a feeder. If you begin with a large feeder, chances are there will be too much water in it for the birds to handle, and it will go sour before birds take it out. Hummingbirds appreciate fresh water and they will rather starve than drink poor quality water. Again, sugar water is nothing more than a minor add-on to their profuse natural ratio; you will lose their company unless you replace water or clean the feeder regularly.

Once a hummer or a group of them takes over your hummingbird feeder, they get used to this particular feeder type and, probably, will not appreciate sudden changes. Anyway, it is up to you to decide which type of feeder you would like your birds to get used to. Feeders with glass reservoirs are easy to clean, but if one falls down it will shatter. Plastic feeders are safer, but they tend to lose color over time. What you should always remember is that a hummingbird feeder is meant to be an attraction to hummingbirds, and that how you manage it will determine how great an attraction your home and garden will be.
