Horse Feed

The calculations for the optimal ratio and amount of horse feed are determined by the horse’s weight, activity level, and age. Therein, you’ll find the optimal selection. Horse feed is without a doubt the most overlooked and important element in all aspects of horse upbringing and training. Doubtless, several horses have gone without adequate nutrition, but the detrimental consequences like premature aging and lack of energy are too disastrous to ponder. Pontificate, if you will, the financial loss attributed to a hurt, inactive, thin horse.

Horses need an abundance of horse feed to remain strong. Horses do not eat meat; they only eat plants and grass. A horse, as most people know, only have the one stomach that is very close to a person’s stomach. Digestion of horse feed is very good; horses also eat things like grass and hay. These are a bit harder to digest. When horses digest their food, their bodies use a bacterial fermentation, which helps break down cellulose in the body. This also prevents diabetes in horses as well.

The amount of horse feed depends on many factors like the horse’s age, weight and how much activity the horse is used to doing. A perfect balance of horse feed would include proteins, hay, grains, supplements and some vitamins. But because raising horses is such a big field, finding the right type of horse feed can prove to be very challenging. There are two types of horse feed. The traditional natural feed and the pellet horse feed.

With pellet food, you may find that the horse feed is easier to measure out. The balance in the ingredients is already done for you. So all you have to do is serve it to your horse. The nutritional value is already calculated and it is easier to plan out your horse’s meal plans better. You know how long it takes to prepare the food and serve it. With traditional food, there is some prep time as well. A downside of pellet horse feed is the taste. Horses are wild in theory and they have an instinct to feed on natural items like carrots, hay and grass. Pellets tend to have a different flavor to them. Plus, when you feed your horse a traditional mix of horse feed they may need less to feel full. Horses are large animals; it would take a lot of pellet feed to fill your horse appetite.

Your horse will give you more enjoyment and use, as a purely practical consideration when the right feed is given. The merits of choosing good horse feed are manifold.
