In the wild, they eat insects, small mammals, and plants and can do OK on dog or cat food and sweet soft fruits when kept in captivity. Unlike European variety, the African varieties do not hibernate and to allow them to do so is fatal, many captive hedgehogs have died due to attempted hibernation.
