Also called Bichon Havanais.
This breed appeared in Cuba in the 1800s after crossing of the Blanquito de la Habana, a local pet, with a Poodle. Modern pets must have inherited their cuteness and playfulness from the former, and the latter must have contributed to their intelligence.
