The Havanese breed was produced by interbreeding of the Blanquito de la Habana, a Cuban toy breed, with another Bishon-type species, which is believed to have arrived with the Spanish from the Mediterranean. These dogs were very affectionate and friendly.

The goal of all subsequent breeding projects was to create a toy breed. The Havanese breed contains the genes of the aforementioned species, as well as those of the Poodle and the Bolognese breed. These pets are very people-loving and gentle, and they are very friendly with children.
