In the 16th century Dutch explorers introduced these animals to Europe. Generally these animals originated from the Andes Mountains region of South America. In the wild they live in mountains and grasslands. These cute rodents are larger than hamsters, but smaller than rabbits. These rodents have compact bodies and no tale. There are 8 species of these animals. They live 4-7 years. It is considered that the ancestors of the domesticated species were the restless cavies, Cavia cutleri. The restless cavy lives in big family groups. They can be found in the long grass, being protected from predators by overhanging stems. They do not make borrows for themselves, but use abandoned burrows from other animals. They give birth to 3-4 young not in the safety of a burrow but out in the open. The young of these animals are born relatively large, with open eyes, fully furred. They are eating the same food as their parents within two days after being born. The guinea pig history and origins are something knowledgeable breeders may know about; photos of these little critters are fascinating indeed.
