Birth Guinea Pig
With the occurance of birth, guinea pig, birds and other animals should be closely watched by the breeder.
A female should be bred for the first time before 7 months of age and if this process is delayed beyond this time, serious problems with delivery may occur. These animals become sexually mature at an early age, so the males should be separated from the females if no mating is planned. After the gestation period of 62 to 70 days, 2-5 babies are born. The young cavies weigh about 70-100 grams. They are born large and fully furred, and can walk about. They also have teeth and open eyes at this time. The young animal squeals loudly when they are hungry. They nurse usually not only from the mothers, but also from other lactating females.

Delivery is not difficult, yet abortions in the case of an alarming incident are common. Females with a shorter period tend to have a large litter. Pregnant saws can suffer from toxemia. The first signs of this problem include lack of appetite, depression, weakness, reluctance to move, incoordination, difficulty breathing, coma and death. It is recommended to buy animals when they are at least 6 weeks of age. The babies should receive proper care and handling. Do not breed these animals if you have no necessary experience.
