Cavies are hystricomorph rodents that originated from the Andes Mountains region of South America. In ancient times, these animals were used by the Indians of Peru as food and as sacrificial offerings to their gods. Legends hold that the animals are mystical beings that can heal the sick and assist the dying. These animals inhabit grasslands, rocky areas, and areas near forests. The average litter size is about 2-5 babies that weigh about 70-100 grams at birth. Adult cavy males weigh from 900 to 1000 grams. Adult females weigh ranges from 700 to 900 grams.

Cavies have short legs, a short neck, a big head and no tail. There are several types of coat of these animals: Short haired type, Abyssinian, Rex Type, Sheltie type, and Peruvian type. Domestic animals are mostly short haired ones. Captive cavies possess docile temperaments, do not bite or scratch when handled, and also possess relatively clean habits. In captivity these rodents can live up to 5 years. They are inexpensive to buy and not difficult to care for. Remember one thing when buying your cavies - all the animals must be of the same sex. It is also important to know prior buying a cavy that the males, as soon as they reach maturity, start fighting with each other and these battles are rather severe.
