Pregnancy lasts an average of 63 days. The species has a litter of about 2-5 babies. The duration of pregnancy for the species is unusually long as compared to that of other rodents. Pregnant females have a grossly enlarged abdomen during the latter stages of pregnancy. Their body weight doubles during pregnancy. Pregnant sows usually do not build nests, which makes it hard to determine the time of delivery. The pregnant female should receive a lot of care and the babies of different sexes should be separated after a while.
