Cavies possess very acute sense of hearing and can even hear sounds beyond the human limits. They can even have preferences in music. These animals also have better sense of smell than humans, but not as well as dogs. These animals recognize each other by smell. They should be fed with special mix, mash or cavy pellets and should also have a daily supply of fresh fruit and vegetables in order to receive necessary amount of vitamin C.

Females should be first bred before 7 months of age; otherwise, there can appear serious problems with delivery. After the gestation period of 63 days one to six babies are born. The young of these animals are born relatively mature. They are born rather large and fully furred. From the very birth they can walk about, and have teeth and open eyes. They should stay with their mothers for at least 2 weeks. In captivity these animals should live in pairs. It is not recommended to place a sow and a boar together because of their high reproductive abilities.
