These sociable creatures are easy to care for; they seldom bite and are exceptionally clean. These animals are alert and may learn to perform a lot of tricks, so they are not difficult to train. The average life expectancy for the animals that are kept as pets is about 7-10 years. Some individuals have been known to live for about 12 years. Domestic species still retain the instinct of their wild relatives to run for cover when startled or threatened, that is why it is necessary to arrange their cage with a shelter where they can seek safety.
