In the 16th century, Dutch explorers introduced these animals to Europe. Nowadays, these animals are among the cutest popular small pets. They are easy to buy and not difficult to maintain. In captivity, these animals live for 3-6 years.

You can keep these animals in wire cages or aquariums. Place the cage so that your cavy cannot be in drafts or direct sunlight. Do not place the cage near a vent for air conditioning or heat. If you choose an aquarium, you won’t need a top on it, since these animals do not jump. You will have to provide your cavies with a water bottle that hangs from the side of the enclosure, not a bowl of water.
