They are rodents and the word 'rodent' stems from the Latin word 'rodere' which means 'to gnaw.' These cute rodents are also known as cavies. They are kept as pets and originate from South America where the natives used the species as a source of food and it is still considered a delicacy today. The Spanish found Andean Indians had domesticated these animals. In the 1500's, Dutch sailors introduced these rodents to Europe and in the 1770's, cavies reached the United States as pets. Adult animals reach a length of 25-36 cm. and have a broad head. These animals have compact bodies and no tails; they also have large incisor teeth that are continually growing. These cute little animals are rather vocal and produce a great deal of different sounds. For example, if a young or adult cavy squeals loudly, it’s hungry or just needs human contact. These cute funny rodents are good natured and rarely bite what makes them ideal pets and today they are the most popular small pet in many countries. Information about guinea pigs and photos may be found at a breeder.
