These animals are widely spread throughout Central and South America, across many habitats. They were being raised by the Incas before the arrival of the conquistadors. Now these rodents are very popular as pets. In captivity, they get lonely living on their own. It is recommended to buy at least two animals of the same sex. The best bets are two adult males who have always lived together, or two sows, or a neutered boar and sow. You can buy a cavy from a reputable pet store, from a professional breeder, or adopt it from a local rescue centre.

There are 4 fairly equal fingers on their strong hands; their feet are three toed. They are able to move rather fast. The hair is mainly coarse and comes in a wide variety of colors and color combinations. Captive cavies are gentle and entertaining animals. They are friendly and intelligent and can even be taught some easy tricks. In the wild, these animals live in small groups.
