A gestation period usually lasts for 63 days. The larger the litter the shorter the term of pregnancy is and vice versa. In comparison to other rodents the duration of pregnancy for guinea pigs is unusually long. It is recommended to ask the breeder a few questions about the pregnancy and how the babies have been reared. An uncomplicated delivery is usually about 1/2 hour, with an average of 5 minutes between deliveries of each baby. An average litter size is 3-4 babies. They are born relatively mature. They are fully furred, have teeth and open eyes, and can walk about.

A small cage for sleeping will be fine for these pets. The cage should be made of wood, metal, or plastic. As cider is toxic for these animals, it should not be used. As Guinea Pigs are rather active they will also need a play room. Guinea pigs must chew to wear down their constantly-growing front teeth. It means that the owner should provide them with chew items such as apple, birch or willow branches, dried (whole grain) bread crusts, hay and/or firm vegetables such as carrots and broccoli stems.
