If you wish to adopt a guinea pig, talk to breeders about getting some of new babies. Cavies have good eye sight. They are social animals and should live in groups or in pairs. Animals in groups should be of the same sex if you do not plan their breeding. A small cage made of wood, metal, or plastic will be fine for these rodents. Use wood shavings for the bedding.Never use sawdust or cedar shavings for this purpose, because cider is toxic for these animals. Cavies also need a play room. Because of their constantly-growing front teeth, cavies need something to chew in order to wear down their teeth. For this purpose use such chew items as apple, birch or willow branches, dried (whole grain) bread crusts, hay and/or firm vegetables such as carrots and broccoli stems.
