Nowadays these animals are among the cutest small pets in the world. These animals belong to the rodent family; they originate in South America. These animals come in many varieties. They vary widely in hair and color composition. The most common varieties found in pet stores are the English Short Hair (also called American) and Abyssinian. Abyssinians are comical looking cavies with long coat that grow to average 2 inches in length. The coat forms rosettes on the body and most Abyssinians have five rosettes, but may have up to ten.

Types Of Guinea Pigs -
bird, chicks
The real origin of these animals is an unsolved etymological problem. Some scientists think that the name may come from Guineamen, who were in the slave trade and may have been the first to bring these rodents from South America to England. The name “cavy” derives from the scientific name Cavia aperea. These cute rodents are born rather mature; the young are born fully haired, with open eyes and ready to run. They make great pets for adults and children alike. They do not bite and posses a friendly and gentle disposition.
