Females should be first bred between 3 and 7 months of age; as for males, so they should be 34 months old at their first breeding. Delaying of the first breeding can cause serious (sometimes life-threatening) problems. Gestation period of the females lasts an average for 63 days. If the litter is large the term of gestation will be shorter and vice versa. As a rule females give birth to 1-6 young in a litter. The young are born fully furred, with teeth and open eyes.

The boars are about 900-1000 gram of weight. The sows’ are smaller being about 700-900 gram. These animals grow to an average body length of 8-14 inches. If you decided to buy a cavy, it is recommended to buy at least two animals. However, you should be aware that two adult boars can fight with each other. The best variant is to place in one cage two sows or a neutered boar and a sow. Never leave your cavy unsupervised if you have some other domestic animals. They don’t get very well along with cats, and as for dogs, they can be as good as gold with your cavy, or decide that the cavy is a rat what won’t be very pleasant for your cavy.
