Long Haired Guinea Pigs
Long haired guinea pigs need strong cages; aviaries are for keeping birds from flying away.
The average life span for a healthy cavy is about 4 to 6 years. These animals originally came from Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil and Peru. They were first domesticated by the Andean Indians, who used these animals for food. These animals probably got their name from being sold for an English gold coin issued from 1663 to 1813. The scientific name of a common species is Cavia porsellus. In the 1500's, Dutch sailors introduced these rodents to Europe and in the 1770's, cavies reached the United States as pets.

Nowadays, these animals are one of the cutest small pets. They are rather inexpensive to buy and to keep. As a rule these animals are 20-40.5 cm in length. Some wild animals can reach a meter in length. These rodents live in pairs or in small groups, they are rather sociable. In the wild they are more active at night. Animals of Silky type have long, soft, silky hair which can grow 8-10 inches in length. These animals demand frequent grooming. Peruvians also have long hair that can grow to 20 inches if uncut.
