Guinea Pig Cages

Guinea pig cages should have plenty of space for guinea pigs to stay fit, fun, and functional. 7 to 10 square feet is a good size, and anything else is just all right. Worldwide experts agree that less than 4 feet is dangerous and hazardous to your little friend’s health and spirit. The old rules are out the door, and thousands of guinea pig owners concur – based on observations and written testimonials. Cavies require vigorous trots around their cages, and less than 5 feet is simply hazardous. Running laps is good for them, and it improves their life quality. Besides, living so close to their pooping area is a bad idea and generally dissatisfying. After all, they need plenty of space to nap without the presence of poop in such close proximity. They need space from each other if multiple pigs are in the same cage. Since they’re quite sociable, they love playmates in the same cage with them.

Guinea pig cages were hewn in glass about 15 years ago for a short phase. Today’s technologies make glass a longgone option. One of the newest styles involves Cubes and Coroplas. These can be rather large, but they provide a lot of exercise space on the upside. These cages resemble pens, but they’re geared toward exercise and physical fitness. Furry critters really love them. Cage measurments should correlate with the number of guinea pigs.

Always line your guinea pig cages with newspaper, wood or cedar chips. Pine chips tend to be overpowering in smell. Use pine if you like its smell. The cage should be cleaned at least twice a week, but perhaps more. The guinea pig can roam around a room when you’re cleaning its cage environs. Be careful, guinea pigs like to chew and crawl under things so block off beds and keep wires at bay and out of sight and accessibility. Guinea pigs like to scurry about relentlessly so make sure they have plenty of space to dart, scurry, run, sprint, and crawl. They like movement, and they adore space to run in circles. Guinea pig cages should be ultra big to accommodate lots of little guinea pigs.
