The species was listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. Due to enormous hunting from the 1900’s up to the 1970’s the species population suffered greatly. The species first started to decline in numbers after the first European settlers arrived to America.

The species survived in five areas: the Northern Continental Divide, Greater Yellowstone, Cabinet-Yaak, Selkirk, and North Cascade ecosystems. Canada is referred to have the greatest population of these animals than the USA. However, in Alberta, the species is at risk.
