The species (Ursus arctos) once was found on the vast territory of the Western United States. These animals inhabited areas near streams and rivers, which made conflicts with humans less likely. By the 20th century, their population was eliminated from 95% of their range and the species survived only in remote wilderness areas.

Their home ranges may be 200-500 sq. km. for females and 1000-2000 sq. km. for males. The species suffers greatly from human activities.
