The species comes out of the dens in spring, when there is little food available for the animals. To feed themselves, the individuals have to search for carcasses of various animals that have not survived the winter. They also eat grasses and other wintered berries.

The species inhabits river valleys, where it can eat a lot of plants, dig roots, and sometimes hunt for calves of elk and moose. In summer months they feed on larvae of ants and wasps and catch fish.
