These animals mate in April or May and the mother with cubs comes out of the den, but the cubs cannot go far from the mother since they are still fed milk. (In some areas there is one bear for every 50-100 sq. km.)

Male and female spend some time together testing each other before mating occurs. Often males herd females onto mountain tops to isolate them from other males. After mating the male and the female separate. The female may mate other males, but the period of readiness is very short.
