There are four similar species of these birds. The largest species is the Sandhill Crane; animals of this species have short bills, red cap and prefer to inhabit fields. The Little Blue Herons are smaller; they are dark blue-grayish in color with a dark bill and greenish legs.

The Tricolored Herons are more slender, with a white head, white belly and the dark chest. The last species is the Great Egret Heron. Animals of this species differ from the others by being more slender, having no head plumes, and having dark legs. Bird breeders may take photos of birds.
