Their excellent working abilities and loving nature make them good guides for the blind and ideal family dogs. The only roles that are not suited for this breed are guard dog and lap dog. These dogs are very active and require much time and attention.

This breed is classified as belonging to the AKC Sporting group. According to the current breed standard, purebred dogs of this breed should be powerful, active and sound, display a kindly expression, and possess eager and self-confident personality. Balance, gait, temperament and working qualities of these hounds are more important than conformation. The wither height of these dogs varies from 21½ to 24 inches, with males larger than females. The average weight of males is 65-75 pounds; females weigh from 55 to 65 pounds. The body length should exceed the height in ratio of 12:11.
