This breed was developed in Great Britain in the late 1800’s and registered by the American Kennel Club in 1927. The original function was to retrieve killed and wounded game on land and water. So the dogs should be very strong and hardy, able to cover long distances carrying a game in the mouth. Two purebred dogs of this breed may look very different, because there exist several types designed for various tasks within the breed. Through the years, breeders have bred for different qualities; it could not but result in the conformation of the dogs. An inch allowance either way is accepted in the dog’s height, so the smallest dogs stand about 20 ½ inches at the withers, while the largest ones reach the height of 25 inches.
