The main aim of the breed was to participate in hunting on land and water and retrieve small game. The breed originated from a series of planned mating carried out by Lord Tweedmouth from 1864. The ancestors of this breed are Tweed Water Spaniel, Irish setter, and other hunting dogs. These dogs are known for their endurance and hard work; they are able to swim in cold water and can detect game easily. The peculiar feature of the breed is its long, dense, lustrous double coat.
