The venom is potent enough to kill a small mammal or bird, but the lizard uses this weapon for defense rather than for killing. In humans, it may cause severe swelling, fever, perspiration, nausea, vomiting, chills and hypertension. If bitten, it is important to disengage the lizard immediately.
