These creatures, along with toads, belong to the same class. The hallmark of the order is lack of tail. The majority of these creatures has external fertilization (by amplexus) and lays a lot of eggs, only a few of which survive in the environment.

There is a great diversity of these amphibians; they inhabit many pats of the world, except polar regions and some oceanic islands. There are 25 families and 4000 species in this order; some species are disappearing or are already gone, but new species are being discovered too.
