The breed was developed in France for hunting purposes and did well as a companion dog. It is not known for sure what breeds were used during the selection, yet the Setter gene pool is believed to be present in the breed.

The European population of the breed in was devastated during World War II and help from American breeders was needed for the breed’s recovery. Nowadays, the breed is used both for hunting, field trials, and makes a good pet due to its wonderful physical and temperament attributes.
