Flying squirrels are about 30 cm in length. They have characteristic folds of skin between their hind and front legs, which enable them to glide for up to 20 meters. Their large eyes provide for excellent night vision; they are nocturnal and prefer to hunt during night hours.

Flying squirrels have many predators, and few of them live more than 4 years. They are exposed to attacks by owls, martens, weasels and hawks, as well as domestic and roam cats.
