Flat coated retreivers can be obtained from rescues or kennels.
The breed is characterized by a substantial coat that occurs in no colors other than solid black or liver. The coat is fine, medium length and feathering on the legs. The ears are not very big and hanging; the breed was admitted to the American Kennel Club in 1915.

The breed was produced by crossing the Newfoundland, Water Dog and the Labrador, and this chemistry has produced a versatile and laborious hunting companion. He is very purposeful, enduring, easy-going and intelligent, superb with children and never showing aggression toward strangers. Flat coated retreivers can be obtained from rescues or kennels.
