In their natural habitats, these birds feed mainly on blue-green and red algae, diatoms, larval and adult forms of small insects, crustaceans, mollusks, and small fishes. Their pink and reddish coloration of feathers, legs and face comes from their diet that is full of alpha and beta carotene pigments.
