These creatures are highly sociable; in the wild they live and nest in colonies. Colonies of some species can consist of as many as 2 million members. Biologists believe that ingestion of shrimp and plankton causes the color change of the young birds from gray to pink.

These creatures’ nest is a cone of mud up to about 45 cm high. A female usually gives birth to one to two whitish eggs; she lays the eggs in a shallow depression at the top of the cone.
