By the late 1970's the animals were thought to be extinct but in the end of 1981 a colony of these animals was found in Meeteetse, Wyoming, USA. The animals were captured for breeding purposes in 1985 due to a sharp decline in the wild population.

As a result of the captive breeding program the black-footed ve been released in Montana (South Phillips County), Wyoming (Shirley Basin), Arizona (Aubrey Valley) and South Dakota (Conata Basin) in the USA. There some animals can be still found in the wild nowadays. The ferret pic can be seen on most breeder farms websites and will include baby pictures.
