After the Mustela nigripes population was practically wiped out by disease, it was determined that the remaining wild Mustela nigripes were at risk for the survival of the species. The last 12 were captured and combined with 6 already in captivity to bring the world total to 18, all in captivity, in 1987. The captive breeding program was successful and they are slowly gaining population. Black footed ferret pictures may mistakenly come up with a baby rodent query.
