The breed is rather easy to train. However, these are sensitive, so it is important they be trained gently, but firmly. Typically, the dog gets along well with other pets. The smaller spaniels were developed initially to hunt the woodcock, which is where the name of the breed was derived.

The dog is a bit larger and a bit more hound like in the head than his American cousin, and is considerably less popular in the United States. Males are usually 16 to 17 inches; females are about 15 - 16 inches. Males weigh from 28 to 34 pounds; females are 26 to 32 pounds.
